Pounded Mass is a great big mess. A mess of ringing synths, a mess of distortion pedals and throbbing bass lines, a mess of beats processed and mashed together. A happily angry mess. In their years producing together, the Welsh brothers John and Paul Healy have released on all the breakcore labels of note Zhark, Praxis, Suburban Trash, Black Monolith, and Kool Pop. Pounding Mass’s sound fits right in with the rest of the Hymen family. Within the dark vibe, the album is all over the place tempo-wise: some hip-hop-style tracks, some with a more industrial feel., and even a few longer sections of beatless dread.
Somatic Respones’s production style lends itself to tracks that melt into one another before you know it. In the end, Pounded Mass is good at conveying the power still inherent in this kind of dark music, but it doesn’t jump out as radically different or better than a lot of other music being made along these lines.
